Working with Salt Company and Salt Church has given me valuable experience in various aspects of design, including creating consistent graphics, designing for both large and small scales, and developing creative merchandise. It has also provided the opportunity to work across different mediums and gain hands-on experience with an actual client.

The merch designs I created served different purposes: to welcome new church attendees, for fundraising efforts, for staff members, for student leaders, and for first-year students at our fall kickoff. Each design has its own unique feel, and it has been rewarding to see students wearing the items around campus. Observing which designs are worn the most has given me valuable insight into what designs resonate most with the college student audience.

I also hand-designed the saltshaker graphics used throughout the ministry’s branding. Salt Company is a nationwide ministry, and while the saltshaker is a common design element, I noticed a lack of consistency in its use at ISU Salt. To address this, I created a new, cohesive "mascot" saltshaker graphic. Additionally, I’ve developed variations of the graphic, incorporating different clothing elements to match specific events, such as a flannel shirt for the Fall Retreat and a gold medal for the Winter Olympics

LARGE SCALE DESIGN

BANNERS 38’ x 91’
CANOPY TENT 10’ x 10’

I also work on large-scale designs for Salt Church, which has more established brand guidelines compared to Salt Company. Designing for large-scale applications presents its own unique challenges. The banners, backdrop, and canopy tent I’ve created are displayed weekly at the church. Throughout the design process, I collaborated with the staff, incorporating their feedback to ensure each design struck the right balance of simplicity while still being functional and effective at a larger scale.

SERMON GRAPHICS

I created sermon graphics for Salt Company and Salt Church, and throughout the process, I’ve developed a clear understanding of the specific visual style that resonates with the church community. Each graphic is unique, but they all maintain a consistent feel. The pastor provides me with a broad direction for the overall tone of the design, and it's up to me to interpret that vision through the lens of the scripture and theme.

For example, with the "Gospel Grit" graphic, I was asked to incorporate a "gym" element to convey toughness, which I interpreted visually to match the theme. Additionally, I've had the opportunity to mentor a new student designer, helping them understand and adapt to the church's unique design voice.
