BREZEL POSTER/VIDEO

POSTER DESIGN
Adobe Illustrator
34” x 48”

For this project, I chose to focus on Germany because my family’s roots trace back to Germany, with migration occurring in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Although the details are unclear and rarely discussed in our family, I did discover that we have our own German family crest, which I included in the poster. I reached out to my mom and older brother to gather what little we knew. The dish I selected was pretzels, a familiar food from my childhood, but one I had never made myself. It was a great opportunity to learn the process of making them from scratch while also selecting a food that people recognize.

Throughout the project, I learned a lot about Germany’s history and culture. I explored the symbolism behind the German flag’s colors, which represent national unity, and the Bauhaus design movement, which influenced modern design. I also discovered that pretzels date back to the 7th century as a symbol of prayer. In creating my poster, I mixed old and modern design elements, using fonts and styles inspired by Bauhaus and my family crest. The project challenged me to break away from my usual design rules, pushing me to be more creative and open to new approaches. It also made me realize how deeply my cultural heritage influences me, even in everyday things like food, which I had taken for granted until now.

COOKING PROCESS VIDEO
Adobe Premiere Pro
1920 x 1080p

In the video, I aimed to translate the elements from the poster into a dynamic visual process, focusing on the act of making pretzels. Shot from above, the video captures each step in a detailed and engaging way, reflecting the same mix of traditional and modern influences. The swirling pretzel dough and the folding process mirror the "flowy" typography in the poster, while the messy salt variations are emphasized in the footage to highlight the cooking process. Just like the poster, the video balances history with the hands-on act of creating, showing both the intricate, symbolic aspects of the pretzel's shape and the contemporary relevance of the dish. By using a top-down view, I wanted to keep the focus on the hands and dough, reinforcing the connection between the family heritage and the personal journey of making something familiar yet new.
